Oxidation-induced changes in microrheologic properties of the red blood cell membrane.
It has been hypothesized that some of the irreversible microrheologic abnormalities of sickle red blood cell (RBC) membranes could result from autoxidative perturbation. To model this possibility, we used micromechanical manipulation to examine the static extensional rigidity and inelastic or plastic behavior of normal RBCs exposed to phenazine methosulfate (PMS), an agent that generates supero...
متن کاملGlobin-chain specificity of oxidation-induced changes in red blood cell membrane properties.
We have previously shown that excess unpaired alpha- and beta-globin chains in severe alpha- and beta-thalassemia interacting with the membrane skeleton induce different changes in membrane properties of red blood cells (RBCs) in these two phenotypes. We suggest that these differences in membrane material behavior may reflect the specificity of the membrane damage induced by alpha- and beta-glo...
متن کاملmeasuring viscoelastic properties of Red Blood Cell using optical tweezers
Efforts have been made to study the behavior of complex materials in micrometer dimensions with various techniques. One of these methods is the use of optical tweezers for biophysical applications. Red blood cells, as the most abundant blood-forming cells, play an important role in the life of living organisms, and their unique mechanical properties are important. In this report, the study of s...
متن کاملCoherence properties of red blood cell membrane motions.
We use a highly sensitive, noncontact, optical interferometric technique to quantify the red blood cell membrane fluctuations at the nanometer and millisecond scales. The results reveal significant properties of both temporal and spatial coherence associated with the membrane dynamics. We show that these correlations can be accounted for by the viscoelastic properties of the cell membrane. From...
متن کاملPhosphorylation of the Red Blood Cell Membrane
The phosphorylation of red blood cell membrane fragments (RBCMF) during Ca ++ transport was investigated. When red cell membrane fragments are incubated with [y-a2P]ATP under the experimental condition which minimizes the phosphorylation of Na+-K+-ATPase, RBCMF are labeled in the presence of Mg ++ without Ca ++. When Ca ++ is added, the labeling decreases due to dephosphorylation of RBCMF. The ...
